WISD Moves to Quarter Grading System and Electronic Grade Reports

Willis, TX, Aug. 17, 2015 – Willis ISD is moving from a six week to a quarter, or approximately nine week grading system, beginning with the 2015-2016 school year. In addition all grade reports will be delivered electronically. Parents will access grades, progress reports, attendance, report cards and more online through parent portal or the Willis ISD mobile app.

WISD’s Zapata Named Region VI Elementary Teacher of the Year

Willis, TX, Aug. 10, 2015 – A. R. Turner first-grade teacher Laura Zapata was named the Region VI Elementary Teacher of the Year at the service center’s annual ceremony last week. Nominees came from across the Region VI service area which comprises 57 school districts.

In June, Zapata took the Elementary Teacher of the Year honors for Willis ISD. The 15-year veteran educator always starts her day by talking to the children in her class and making them feel connected.

Context Scoot

Mrs. Gentry's 5th grade class paired up to "scoot" around the room at the different cards laid out for them. In the 1 minute time allotted they had to read the task card and determine the meaning of the unknown word using just their context clues.

Cold weather can't stop us.

With the temperature way below what we are used to here in Texas, our kids and teachers have had to come up with alternate activities to keep active and warm during PE/Recess. Coach Fossmo teaches the kids the basics of floor hockey. The kids enjoyed learning the game and having fun with friends.

Turner Student goes to the State Capitol

Turner 3rd grader; Sophie had a unique opportunity to see firsthand and be a part of our State Legislature. She was able to serve as Honorary Senate Page for the day in the 84th Legislative Session alongside Senator Brandon Creighton; House Majority leader as well as enjoy dinner with House Representative Will Metcalf one night. Sophie says this was a fun experience that she won't soon forget.

Happy Birthday, Dr. Suess

Mrs. Schneider's Kindergarten class had a great time celebrating the great Dr. Suess' birthday. They read stories, made fun projects and took time to take silly pictures.

Rodeo Art Finalists

Students submitted entries from all over the district to the Annual Rodeo Art Show. Turner was fortunate to have many entries receive ribbons and special honors. National Elementary Honor Society Induction

On January 15, 2015 with a host of friends and family in attendance; 35 5th grade students were inducted into the National Elementary Honor Society. These students will learn new leadership skills and participate in service projects to improve our school and community. Membership in NEHS provides many new experiences to add value to education. We know they will make the most of this opportunity. Congratulations.
