Severe storms passed through Willis in the early morning hours of April 27, leaving behind downed power lines and trees, electrical outages and damaged homes and buildings. As a result, Willis ISD closed school for two days on April 27 and 28. This came on the heels of a school closure April 18 due to severe flooding in the Houston area. Texas Commissioner of Education Mike Morath already granted Houston-area districts two missed instructional day waivers for flood closures. Willis ISD can apply waivers to the missed days of April 18 and April 27. However, TEA is requiring students make up instructional time lost on April 28.
To meet this requirement, Willis ISD will use the “Inclement Weather Days” plan for “Day Number Two” on the official 2015-2016 Academic Calendar. The calendar indicates early release for students on Wednesday, June 1 and Thursday, June 2, with no school on Friday, June 3. Instead, students will attend school the full day on Wednesday, June 1. They will now be required to attend school on Friday, June 3. Early release days will be on Thursday, June 2 and Friday, June 3. Early release times are two hours prior to the normal dismissal times by campus. Regular attendance policy applies for the additional instructional day.
Parent letters were sent home with all students on Wednesday, May 4. (Willis High School students and parents received an email; no hard copy). The letter can be viewed below in English or Spanish.
